Lugu Lake is one of the deepest fresh water lakes in China and it is also one of the rare unpolluted lakes in the world. As it is on Yunnan highland, the altitude of Lugu Lake is about 2,680 meters (about 8,793 feet). It covers an entire area of more than 50 square kilometers (about 12,355 acres). The average depth of the lake water is 45 meters (about 148 feet), with the deepest place of 93 meters (305 feet) deep. The blueish water is so clear that you can even see the bottom of the lake some 12 meters (39 feet) from the surface.
The lake shapes like a horse's hoof - long from north to south, and narrower from east to west. The lake view changes constantly throughout the day. The morning mist mixed with the sun light makes the lake mysterious like a fairyland. When the sun rises up and projects the hill shadows onto the water, the lake has a jade green color. The lake is calm and dark green in the evening , and is peaceful when night comes, with gentle wind blows and water ripples.
