Weibao Mountain of Dali

Article Guide:Situated south of the seat of Weishan County,Weibao Mountain covers an area of 19.4 km².With an elevation of 2,509 meters,the mountain comprises ranges of verdured majestic hills and peaks covered with dense forests.

Weibao Mountain is the birthplace of the Kingdom of Nanzhao. It is said that Xinuluo,the founder of Nanzhao,1efI the Ailao Mountain for refuge and stayed here as a farmer.On the mountain,there is a stone on which Supreme Master Lao used to sit in meditation.It was allegedly here that Xinuluo was enlightened and inspired by the master and became a local mountain patron god.Legends of this kind are known as the "Traces of Immortals at Weibao".

Weibao Mountain is a Taoist mountain famous both in Yunnan and through China.In the Book of Religions,Encyclopedia Sinica,it is listed among the 1 3 importart Taoist mountains in China.It is where Shu Han Taoism propagated.Indeed,during the Ming and Qing dynasties,Taoist clergymen from Mount Wudang of Hubei and the Qingcheng Mountain of Sichuan built more than 20 Taoist palaces and temples here. With these magnificent palaces and temples,Taoism became popular here during that period. Existing now are such Taoist buildings as Zhunti Pavilion,Ganlu Pavilion,Xunshan Hall,Wenchang Palace,Yuhuang Pavilion,Doulao Pavilion,Peihe Tower,Hanzhen Tower and Changchun Cave.Among them,Xunshan Hall is the most special because Xinuluo,the local mountain patron god,is enshrined here.As the Taoist god of Yunnan,Xinuluo fully represents the local national characteristics of Taoism in this province.

On the pier of the bridge under the Wenlong Pavilion in the Wenchang Palace is the Qing fresco "Dancing under the Pine Trees" which depicts the scene of the Yi people dancing happily,a relatively valuable cultural relic. Every year,a temple fair for mountain pilgrimages is held on the second month of the 1unar year from the first to the fifteenth day,during which multitudes of visitors make it a grand occasion.
